Right In The Backyard

So it seems there’s some definite controversy over the city of Burlington, Vermont developing their own Telecommunications company. Apparently a lot of time has been spent on both sides of the spectrum. The private companies that provide high-speed internet to the state’s largest city, mainly Adelphia and Verizon, for sure do not want to see Burlington Telecom enter the fold and force a bidding war or turf war. However, there are many complaints about the service received from both Adelphia and Verizon.

Personally, after living outside of Vermont for sometime before returning a few years back, I think Vermont has a long way to go to catch up to the rest of the country, and even further for Europe, in terms of the digital revolution. If more competitors, be it an actual city run division, need to jump in the fold to get companies like Adelphia and Verizon, who’ve been delaying additional rural growth throughout the state for way too long, to improve service and reduce costs, than I’m for it. The major risk is certainly with the city of Burlington if the telecom venture is a failure, but I’ll await someone’s opinion as to alternatives :)
