I Made The Leap: 30-inch LCD Monitor

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 6:07 pm

Although it hasn’t arrived yet, I bought myself a Christmas present. Actually, my company bought a christmas present. It hasn’t arrived yet, so I can’t say too much about it. So a few days ago I AM Presentations bought the 30″ Apple Display. My brother has purchased a couple of 30″ displays from Small Dog Electronics but realized they were just too big for him, so he returned them.

Apple had relisted some 30″ displays on their refurb list at $300 less the original price, so I had to pounce. I received a confirmation from Apple that they shipped the monitor today. Can’t wait to get the 30″ Apple Cinema Display next to my old 22″ Apple display. Now, that’s a trooper. If the 30″ lasts as long as my 22″ has (crossing fingers hoping 22″ never dies), I will be a real happy camper — er, coder, er whatever.

No Vista in 2006, or Leopards either

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 5:35 pm

The year is nearly over, the holiday shopping season upon us, and another year has passed with no upgrade of the Microsoft operating system, termed Vista. What does all this mean? Well, look for it next year because I’m quite sure it’ll be released and loaded with many bugged features. I don’t mean bugged to harp on Microsoft and the Windows team, but it’s expected to be laden with so many tricks and treats that they can’t all work perfectly.

Meanwhile, Apple has continued is steady expansion of the Unix based operating system — 10+. I expect Leopard to be out early next year, possibly at Macworld inwhich case it could be Microsoft to market. Leopard will make Apple Computer’s 5th major upgrade of the Unix based OS. What one will we see, or use first….?

More iPhone Rumors

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 2:33 am

Was just reading some blogs and came across a few more hints that Apple Computer is coming out with the iPhone at the MacWorld in January. Of course whether or not Apple releases a phone doesn’t matter unless you have or can get the carrier service with it…

Here’s what some rumors are as to what Apple might be releasing as the next new tech gadget to have.

Apple Computer Running Wild

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 12:27 pm

Red iPods are selling like crazy. Apple launches upgrades to the MacBook, now providing the user with Intel Core 2 Duo — kind of a mouthful if you ask me. And, less we forget they also have the MacBook Pro upgrades. All this ontop of shipping the new iPod shuffle in time for the holidays.

Apple Computer has been tearing up Wall Street with solid returns and growth. This leads me to wonder what type of impact next year’s release of the iTV will have on consumers. Of course VISTA from Microsoft is suppose to be on the shelves in January, and it’s been sometime since a version of Windows has been released. Does Bill Gates have any tricks up his sleeve, or will Microsoft remain in Apple rear-view mirror… I mean, I’ve yet to see anyone with a Zune, you?

Where is The iPhone?

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 12:30 pm

If any readers don’t know it by now, Unicel (one of the larger cellular providers in the state of Vermont) SUCKS! I am finally jumping ship and switching to Sprint/Nextel. Here’s a bit of my latest dealings with the horrible business known as Unicel:

I somehow lost my charger travling, probably
wasn’t packed into one of my bags real well and came out
on a luggage rack or something. So, I go to the closest
Unicel dealer (which is my phone company) and ask about a
charger for it. They don’t have one for this model,
and they say I can’t get one for the house but maybe a car one. The
guy tells me that with an adapter they have it will work.
So I buy the charger and the adapter and go home. I get
home and try to hook it up only to realize the adapter
does not fit the charger ##- so it doesn’t work. I go back
to the Unicel store and the guy who sold it to me is at
lunch. The girl working is not to anxious to help me, she
has 100 or so little cards she’s scanning but informs me
that they don’t have anything that will work for my phone
at that store, and I could try a different location (she
doesn’t offer to call them and see if they have what I
need). So frustrated I ask if I can return what I bought
and she says yes but I’ll have to wait until she’s done
scanning her little cards. So I ask her if there’s any
place in the mall that might be able to sell me the
charger I need. She tells me to check the Verizon store
and come back to do the return in a little bit. I go to
the V-store and they only have a car charger ##- noticing
my battery is nearly dead I buy it for a ridiculous price.
I then go back to the Unicel store and try to return my
no-good charger and no-good adapter. That same girl tells
me that I can’t get the cash I paid just 30 minutes ago
for it, that it has to be credited to my account. Now I’m
getting really pissed. Since I have no other choice for
refund I say fine, so she attempts to start the process
when she realizes the guy that sold me the charger and
adapter never entered it on my account, so she can’t
credit my account for it. She goes to get him in the back
of the store to refund me and he comes out and says he
accidentally gave me the wrong adapter, so he gave me a
different one. I try it there and the adapater fits the
charger. BUT, it’s not charging my phone. The car adapter
from Verizon works! otherwise my phone would
be dead and I’ll have done wsa wasted nearly $100 on
adapters and chargers that will get credited to an account
that I will be forced to cancel because Unicel’s service sucks!

This is really sucking! I need to get a different provider
and a new phone, because I think the loss of my phone
service is inevitable. Also means I need to do a ton of
data entry to save my numbers since Unicel informed me that I
can’t transfer the numbers in the phone or my number to a
new plan…

This sucks…

Movies and TV ##- Just A Little Bite Out of The Apple

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 6:50 pm

It’s all over the web, you’re not finding anything “announcement-wise” hear that you probably haven’t already read today. But in the case you are looking for a bit of insight into Apple’s recent announcements of the upcoming iTV, then you’ve come to the right place.

I know there are devices that perform such tasks as the yet to be released iTV, but this is Apple Computer and we all know by now that integration and ease-of-use are not only priorities of Jobs and Co., they’re the backbone of the entire corporation. So I’m fairly confident that iTV will rock, and how sweet is the new iTunes Movie Store? Although I don’t think it should be called, but probably more deserving of iMovie Store.

Oh ya, Apple also happened to unleash another iPod demon in the revamped shape of the iPod nano, and the re-shaped iPod Shuffle.

I Spy With MY Little “i” a New iMac

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 12:07 pm

Apple announced there’s a new, completely different line of iMacs on the block. The new line features a new 24-inch iMac. Apple new tagline is Faster. Bigger. Brighter. And with the base model starting at 17-inches, a mid-level 20-inch iMac, and now the largest iMac ever at 24-inches, Apple seems to know what consumers are wanting ##- more real estate!

The fastest iMac ever, the 24-inch iMac provides professional performance along with the convenience of an all-in-one design. Like its 17-inch and 20-inch siblings, it features the new 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor with speeds ranging from 1.83GHz to 2.33GHz. The new processor delivers up to 50% more performance than the previous 20-inch iMac. It also doubles the amount of L2 cache, the twin cores sharing 4MB between them.(2) The result? Turbocharged performance, making it easier ??? and more fun ??? than ever to work with digital photos, movies, music, and the web.

Obviously these iMacs will come standard with the iLife suite and other amazing Apple applications. For some specs released on the new iMacs visit Apple.

Apple’s Cooking Again

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 1:44 pm

Rumors are abound that the much anticipated iTunes Movie Store is now actually on the horizon. Apple Insider is reporting a possible announcement from Apple Computer next week. Personally, I think the world knows it’s inevitable. I have no idea what the price for flick will be, the resolution, or the speed in which the servers will be able to deliver the file. But that might just be the reason why we haven’t heard of anything regarding the store until now.

Will this change the industry like iTunes and the iTunes Music Store. Possibly. Only time will tell, but the official announcement has still not come from Apple yet. Let’s wait and see.

Mac Pro For Everyone, I Like The Displays

Filed under: techNews — admin @ 5:41 pm

Word is out, Apple shook the world once again at the WWDC. With the announcement of the fastest Mac ever, Apple has also given the world a peak at the next version of their Operating System (10.5) and it sure will be sweeeeeeet!

Before I go into what I really like, since it has barely been 6 months since my last Apple desktop purchase, which is the price reduction on the Apple displays, I’ll give you the suggested specs for the new all-might powerful Apple Computers:

Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
4MB shared L2 cache per processor
1.33GHz dual independent frontside buses
1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
16x double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD??RW/CD-RW)

If that’s not power, what is?

Ok, Now that the great hardware on the processing side has been mentioned, I’d like to elaborate on how happy I am to finally see a significant price-drop on the 30-inch Apple display. It was $2500 but now sold at $1999 brand new. Since I tend to like shopping the refurbished resellers, I can’t wait to see what the refurb price on these will be now. If the can get close enough to $1500, hell I might have to buy 2.

I’m still on my old 22″ Apple display, and it doesn’t match the style of my G5. So Apple if you’re listening, please put some 30-inch displays around $1500 on your store.

Never too many needles in a hay-stack when you’re talking about the WWDC for Apple Computer. There are many new things people expect or hint will be revealed today. The biggest rumors are that Apple will be flashing some new hardware (most likely with some significant speed increases), and giving the world a peak at Operating System 10.5 ##- codenamed Leopard.

Personally I’m looking forward to the evolution of the OS. While I wouldn’t mind seeing new machines from Apple, I just bought my current computer this past December and won’t be ready for an upgrade for quite some time. But, upgrading the OS is always crucial to me. I think a lot of the speed that Macintosh experiences is due to the fluidity of the OS.

So, hopefully I’ll be continuing with some insights into the news of the day: WWDC!
